Substance is a composition for six pianos, each tuned a 1/12 tone apart. The piece begins with a hocket of combination tones resulting from a 2:1. As the piece progresses, distant harmonic areas are explored, building to a climax of dense piano clusters and roaring gestures in the low register of the ensemble.
Chris Tuohey is a composer from Liverpool, UK. Chris has studied composition at the University of Cambridge and Liverpool Hope University with John Hopkins and Stephen Pratt. Recently, Chris has developed an interest in 72 edo as a means of combining elements of extended just intonation with traditional systems of pitch organisation that are normally associated with 12 edo.
