## A little piece that uses mensuration canon technique and attempts to ## bring the listener to a meditative space of communion with ancient ## feeling and/or evoke Nature with a capital "N". I don't know what ## "style" this is, but it takes a little from Finnish/ancient ethnic ## tradition (instrumentation-wise, and the prevalence of drone, which ## conjures both traditional music and feelings of timeless antiquity for ## me); some from Medieval and Renaissance thought (mensuration as idea or ## the obsession with the idea of voice leading "unity or organicism" of ## some sort); and some modern techniques (electronics, irregular phrase ## lengths and meters, composing using self-similarity)... ## ## Dedicated to my colleague in Finland, Juhani Nuorvala, who has inspired ## my fascination for Kanteles and Zithers with his beautiful composition ## for those instruments. ## # amp setup 1: i=202 "3.0%1.5%0.82%6900" div=0 1 &-1 # instrument setup # 1: is melody, 2: is 'ghost of melody', 3: is droning voice 1: t=85 i=13 "0.01%0.01%0%2.3%5000%6%0.5" div=7 1/8 pan=0.36 mix=2.0 2: i=13 "0.27%0.02%0%2.3%800%7%0.05" div=7 1/8 pan=0.7 mix=1.0 3: i=13 "0.04%0.01%0%2.3%1000%6%0.5" div=7 1/8 pan=0.5 mix=1.1 ## ## Since voice 1 and 2 were composed first, and are in canon at 2:3 ratio ## to each other, I opted to list them not "on top" of each other. It also ## made it easier to cut and paste and change temporal parameters quite easily. ## Perhaps at some point, were I to prepare a printed score of this, I will ## line voice 2 up here. But for now, you get the main line and the drone ## roughly together. Voice two is listed below this block (scroll down a ways). ## ## 1st statement of melody (it will occur 4 times total) 1: @6 -1ttt @63 0 @57 -1ttt @6 -1ttt @57 1/16 -3 -2 1/8 @62 -1 1/16 @58 3 @< 4 3: @65 rr 4.-1ttt -1ttt -1ttt -1ttt 1: 1/8 @66 5 @< 3 1t @58 -1ttt r @59 -3 r 1 3: 4.-1ttt -1ttt -1ttt 1: @64 3 2 3 @6 2 r @66 1 @57 3 r rr 1/16 @63 3 @6 .4 @64 4 @61 .5 3: 4.-1ttt -1ttt -1ttt 1: 1/8 @< 5ttt 6 @67 7t 7 r r @< 4 3 r @63 1t @< 0 3: 4.-1ttt -1ttt 0ttt 0ttt 1: @65 -1ttt @< -2ttt -3 -2ttt -3 -3 @57 -5 -4t @6 -5 @57 -5 3: 4.-1ttt -1ttt -1ttt -1ttt -1ttt 1: @6 3 r 3 @< 4 3 1t 2 r 4 5 6 7 7t 6 3: 4.-1ttt -1ttt -1ttt -1ttt 1: @68 5t t t 4ttt @7 3 @65 2t @< 1 0 -1 -2 @57 -3 3: 4.-1ttt -1ttt -1ttt -1ttt 1: @63 -4 @58 -5t r @61 -3 @57 -3 -4t 3: -1ttt -1ttt 1: @57 -5 rr 1/16 @6 -5 @56 -4 1/8 @58 -5 r @62 1 0 -1 t 3: -1 tt t t -1 t t t -1 1: @65 1t @68 3 @61 -5 1/16 @67 -6 @62 -3 @63 -5 @58 -6 1/8 @6 -5 3: -1t t t -1 t t 1: @56 -6 @< 1/16 -7 -6 1/8 -5 1/16 -3 -2 1/8 @67 -1ttt 3: -1 1/16 -1 -1 1/8 -1 1/16 1 0 1/8 -1ttt 1: rr @63 4ttt @59 3 @61 4ttt r rrrr 3: 0t tttt @59 0 @61 0ttt r rrrr # that was 157/8 (157 8th notes long -- oh cool...a prime number...I didn't # plan it that way, but that's cool.
